Nuclear-powered submarines offer various military advantages over the diesel-powered submarines that Australia had been planning to buy from France. This initiative was hailed in the three countries themselves and in the Asia-Pacific-at least outside of China, whose growing power AUKUS seeks to offset. Its first project will be “to deliver a nuclear-powered submarine fleet for Australia.”
On Wednesday, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States announced the formation of a new trilateral security partnership, AUKUS.
